FAQs
What sort of things will you illustrate?
I like to think I’m pretty flexible with the types of jobs I’ll work on. I have experience with children’s books, posters, editorial illustrations and logos. As long as the project is within my scope and abilities I will happily take it on. I stay within my style and lean towards projects that involve animals, nature and plants. Simply because I enjoy working on these the most. I’m always up for learning new things and trying something I haven’t before.
How much do your illustrations cost?
The cost of hiring me to illustrate for you is a hard one to give a straight answer for; every project is different! Elements like style and usage are factors that effect the total cost. I figure out the price by how long it will take me to complete and apply my day rate (or hourly if it’ll take me less than a day to complete). The more detail you want (for example a full double paged spread vs a smaller spot illustration) will also dictate the final figure. The longer I work on a project for you the higher the price will be.
as of 2025 the average my children’s books cost can be anywhere between £3000 and £6000.
What is your process?
My process is really simple. I work in steps that you can review each time.
You’ll send me a breakdown of the illustrations you need and maybe some text (if it’s a story book for example as it can give me some context) and I will send you thumbnails. Thumbnails are really rough ideas for the illustration and are just to give you an idea of composition.
Next I’ll send you the sketches which will be more refined and give you a good idea of what the final illustration will look like.
Next I’ll move on to lining the work. This is where the illustration really starts to take shape.
Next I’ll colour them
At each stage you get a chance to ask for reasonable edits and changes. I give one round of revisions per stage included in the initial price but any further edits beyond that will be an additional cost. Once a step has been approved I can’t go back to it. It’s a lot harder to change things from previous steps once I've moved on so make sure you’re happy before I move on!
I like to give my clients as many opportunities to voice their opinions as possible so that we remain on the same page. I’ve found that working this way with open and frequent communication ends up with illustrations we’re both happy with!
Do you work with a contract?
i work with contracts for every job I take. For those new to working with contracts I promise it isn’t as scary as it sounds. I’m happy for you or for myself to provide the contract and we can review and amend it until we’re both happy.
Will I own the rights to the illustrations?
I prefer to retain my rights to illustrations I create. Not only because I like my work to remain mine but so that my illustrations don’t get edited or used in a way I don’t align with.
How will I receive the illustrations?
As a digital artist you will receive my illustrations via email or WeTransfer. Which one I send it through depends on the size of the file. I can send the illustrations through in various different formats depending on what you require. The original file that the illustration is on will not be provided without an additional cost and a clause in the contract stating your intentions with the file. I’d prefer the integrity of my illustrations to remain as they were when I worked with them.
